Frome reach semis

WESTERN BUREAU:

FROME High School became the first qualifiers for the semi-finals of the 2000 Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup yesterday when a double strike by Jan Murray gave them a come-from-behind 2-1 against Garvey Maceo in their Group Two game at the Frome Sports ground.

"It was a very tough game and we are happy we came away with all three points," said Boysie Nicholson, whose team had a 2-0 win against Holmwood in their first round fixture.

"We remain quite confident of going all the way so we expect to do just as well in the semi-finals."

Garvey Maceo took the lead with a superb strike on the stroke of half time. Dwayne Foster pounced on a rebound and fired a powerful volley past an helpless goalkeeper Andra Christie.

Frome stormed back strongly in the opening minutes of the second half forcing Garvey Maceo back into their own half. They were rewarded in the 50th minute when Murray pounced on a cross and his glancing header went in off the upright.

With the Frome fans still celebrating, Murray struck for the second time, a minute later. A pass which originated with midfielder Fabian Blake found Murray with space before the Garvey Maceo goal and he made no mistake.

Finding themselves behind, Garvey Maceo threw caution to the wind and went all out in attack. They got two good chances to draw level. In the 72nd minute, Foster got behind the defence but fired inches wide. Ten minutes later, Kerry McLean rounded the goalkeeper but had his shot cleared off the line.
