Sir Florizel's funeral procession

THE ENTIRE area between Munroe Road and the Providence Methodist Church Cemetery on Old Hope Road in St. Andrew will be closed to vehicular traffic today, for the interment of Sir Florizel Glasspole, former Governor-General of Jamaica.

However, pedestrian traffic will have access to shopping facilities in the cordoned-off area.

Sir Florizel died on Saturday, November 25, at the age of 91 and will be given a State funeral today at the Coke Methodist Church at East Parade, Kingston, commencing at 10:00 a.m.

After the funeral service, the funeral procession will journey to the Providence Methodist Church Cemetery, Old Hope Road, St. Andrew, where the former Governor-General's wife Lady Josephine is buried.

The procession will travel along East Parade to East Queen Street on to Duke Street, National Heroes' Circle, Marescaux Road, Caledonia Avenue, Tom Redcam Avenue, Arthur Wint Drive, Mountain View Avenue, Old Hope Road, Munroe Road, then to the Providence Methodist Church on Old Hope Road for interment.

The procession will slow down at three points, on reaching Gordon House, where Sir Florizel served as Cabinet Minister and member of the House of Representatives; the National Heroes' Circle offices of the Ministry of Education and Culture, where he served as an Education Minister from 1957 to 1962 and 1972 to 1973 and at Wolmer's Boy's School, which Sir Florizel attended.

The police will be responsible for directing traffic along the route and motorists are asked to adhere to their directions.

The order of the procession will see the Director of Protocol in front followed by out-riders, then the casket and the clergy, who will be followed by family members, the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, foreign dignitaries, chief justices, members of the Cabinet and the Leader of the Opposition, followed by the Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force and the Commissioner of Police.

There will be an Honour Guard from the entrance of the Providence Methodist Church to the burial site.
