The new millennium bogeyman

THE EDITOR, Madam:

WHEN I was a child, it was the norm for the 'bogey-man' to be the main source of fear. At night, terror would grip your mind as your imagination ran wild, about what you could not see in the dark!

One would think that adulthood would dissolve these fears, however, we have become caught up in a whole new set of 'bogey-men'. These are not the ghostly type, but ones that fill us with hysteria, and sheer panic, from uncertainty. In the 1960s, there was the 'black power' bogeyman, who turned out to be rather fickle. The 1970s brought the 'communist' bogeymen, who turned out to be far more terrifying in disproportion to their relatively tiny numbers, even managing to create mass 'panic-flight'.

The 1980s, and 1990s, brought the 'dollar devaluation' bogeyman, who continues to terrorise us today, along with the 'gunman bogeyman'. This new millennium has brought an entirely new bogeyman on the scene, this is the CCJ bogeyman.

One wonders where it will all end, when will we be able to grow up and put our fears into rational perspective, so that we can deal with them, rather than be frightened into petrifying terror.

I am etc.,
