
Benbow DR. CHARLES Denbow has been appointed to the post of Professor in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, with effect from October 11, 2000.
Professor Denbow is a distinguished clinical cardiologist of international renown who has focused on cardiovascular diseases that are important in the Caribbean. He has made significant and important contributions to knowledge in his field, his publications appearing in regional and highly regarded peer-reviewed international medical journals. Professor Denbow has a good record of original work, with much of his research work centred on patient-focused clinical cardiology, emphasising therapeutic and diagnostic advances that affect the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
A naturalised Jamaican, Charles Denbow received his early education at Queen's College in his native Guyana and went on to obtain the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with Honours from the University of the West Indies, Mona in 1971. He had a distinguished undergraduate career, obtaining many medals and prizes throughout his undergraduate training. He also holds postgraduate qualifications in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases from the University of the West Indies and the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, University of Minnesota respectively. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).
Professor Denbow first served at the University Hospital of the West Indies as an Intern and later Resident and Senior Resident in Medicine. He joined the staff of the University of the West Indies in 1976, was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Medicine in 1979 and Senior Lecturer in 1986, specialising in the field of Cardiology. Charles Denbow has also held appointments in a number of prestigious institutions overseas. He has been Visiting Professor in the Section of Cardiology at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and External Examiner in Internal Medicine at the University of Guyana Medical School.
Professor Denbow has been an active contributor to scientific meetings mainly in the Caribbean region but also in North America, Europe and Asia. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Black Cardiologists, Atlanta, Georgia and was Co-Chairman at the 11th Annual Scientific Session of the Associa-tion of Black Cardiolo-gists held in Atlanta in 1998.. He was also External Examiner for the Final MBBS Examination at Guy's, King's, Thomas's Medi-cal School at the University of London in June 1999.
The new Professor has played a significant role as a clinician/teacher and administrator at the UWI. He served as the Faculty of Medical Sciences representative on the Mona Campus Committee for Graduate Studies (1993-1994), and has been the Academic Staff representative on the Appointments Committee since 1996. He has served as Acting Head of the Department of Medicine on several occasions and was appointed Head of the Department in 1998. He has also held the position of Vice Dean (Clinical Medicine), Chairman of the Faculty Sub-Committee on Graduate Studies and Chairman of the Admission Committee, Faculty of Medical Sciences at Mona (1993-94).
