Long journey in love

MAGNIFICIENT: Maxie and Matildo Lindo celebrating 46 years of marriage. - Ian Allen

MAXIE and Matildo Lindo of Grove Hill, St. Elizabeth, have been married for so long they can't even remember how they met or the events which led to them being man and wife for more than 46-years.

"It is so long ago that me caan even remember the whole thing about how we propose and what we did....me really don't remember," said Mrs Lindo, the more talkative of the two.

The couple however said they knew each other a long time before they got married "We basically grew up in Grove Hill and developed feelings for one another as young people," Maxie said.

At a very small wedding in a community church, the couple exchanged wedding vows in December 1954. There were no Kodak moments as the couple had no photographers at their wedding.

Mrs. Lindo, however, proudly pointed out that she still wears the same ring which her husband gave to her 46 years ago. "I try my best not to let anything happen to it and I will always cherish it," she said.

The ring holds so much more sentimental value now because Mrs. Lindo says her husband is extremely ill with a heart disease and is now bedridden. She says she is very concerned about her husband's failing health and worries about being left alone if anything should happen to him.

"I just hope and pray that he will be okay soon because him is in a whole lot a pain and I don't want him to suffer," she said.

The couple, whose marriage produced eight children, say they always look forward to celebrating their anniversary and that they always do it in their own simple way.
