To install the lights they took the water

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I was born in Queens, New York. I visit Jamaica practically every year. My father and distant relatives reside there. The one thing that always bothers me about Jamaica is the undeveloped areas. Why is it that the government spends so much money on tourism when there are places that have no light, no road, no water, and lack jobs.

I remember seven years ago when I was eleven and came to Jamaica, I had to walk 10 miles to get transportation. The area my family come from is called Breadnut Walk in St. Elizabeth next to Ginger Hill off Y.S. Falls. A couple of years ago when they were installing light there they cut out the pipes for running water. What sense does that make? Now if the people want water they have go to the river, which is a long distance away. The only fixing the road ever got was when the people from this area gathered together and did the job themselves. I am sure that this is not the only undeveloped area in Jamaica.

To me this is pitiful ; the government should look at this and fix it. The last thing I would like to address is the train. The government should fix the train line, because most tourists do not want to hassle with the crowd on the minivans and small taxis.

I am, etc.
