THE threat of rain was not enough to stop patrons from turning out in great numbers, to D' Millennium Fair Blow Out Number 1, at the Marketplace aka "Carnival City" on Constant Spring Road, St. Andrew, Monday night.
The event which kicked off the Jamaica Carnival 2001 calendar, was very well attended with women, men and even children doing the latest soca and dancehall moves.
Byron Lee and the Dragonaires along with Leon Caldero, Oscar B and Admiral Bailey literally brought the house down and had patrons screaming for more and holding their ground even when rain began to drizzle from the dark skies.
Oscar B tantalized the crowd doing cover versions of Junior Kelly's Love So Nice, Beres Hammond's Sweetness for Weakness, Morgan's Heritage's Down By the River, Alton Ellis' Let him try and Zumjay's Courtney.
He later returned to tickle their taste buds with Square One's Kittycat before calling Admiral Bailey on stage.
The former number one deejay took the stage and belted out soca renditions of his number one hits Think Me Done, Della Move and Nuh Weh Nuh Betta Dan Yard, and other songs before calling back Oscar B and doing a song which had the crowd crying for more.
The crowd went wild when Leon Caldero took the stage. When he removed his shirt the ladies screamed, they screamed even more when he threatened to take off his pants.
He got the patrons to fever pitch with a few songs showing them how people all around the world did their different kinds of wine.
To prove his point he called a Dutchman on stage for him to wine and show how the people in Holland did it. The entire place broke into laughter when he began.
But it was all in good fun as he received a healthy round of applause.
From all indications Jamaica Carnival 2001 should be a well supported and fun filled event.
