Woman of Faith

Mrs. Dileno Ferguson

By Byron McDaniel, Freelance Writer

BORN JULY 4, 1909 in Jackson Town, Trelawny, to Joseph and Maude Linton, Mrs. Dileno Ferguson has faith in God, putting Him first in whatever she does.

Her mother died when she was a baby and she was cared for by her father who was an itinerant preacher.

Young Dileno attended the Wait-A-Bit Elementary School, also in Trelawny. At 24, she married Harold Ferguson, a farmer of Joe Hut. She worked along with him on their farm.

The union produced five daughters whom Miss 'Di', as she is affectionately called, passed on her Christian principles, referring to her offsprings as the five wise virgins, and with dry humour said: "Mi teach dem not only to trim dem lamp but carry matches too, as the devil have a way of putting out yuh light."

Following the death of her husband ten years ago, Mrs. Ferguson went to live in England, but returned home seven years ago. She now lives with her daughter Leanora Virtue at Walderston, Manchester.

Asked what accounted for her long life and lifestyle, the 91-year-old widow said, "Mi is a Christian with faith in God. I have no special food but love steam fish. I do not like rice though. I used to drink one beer too yuh know."

Her daughter describes her as very talkative who never misses the 6 o'clock news in the mornings, sipping a cup of tea.
