BREESE...had match haul of 9 for 93. BRIDGETOWN, CANA:
CHAMPIONS Jamaica paid the price for a late declaration and a few dropped catches when Barbados held on for a draw on the final day of their second round Busta Cup cricket match at Kensington Oval yesterday.
Opting to set Barbados a daunting victory target of 317 runs in a minimum of 70 overs as opener Chris Gayle fashioned an unbeaten 131 in their second innings total of 255 for six declared, Jamaica were forced to settle for first innings points when Barbados ended on 138 for eight in their second innings.
Wicket-keeper Courtney Browne, who was out just before play ended, made a face-saving 45 as he and leg-spinner Dave Marshall, not out on two, batted defiantly for a crucial 70 minutes to frustrate the Jamaicans.
The pair had linked up with Barbados tottering on 106 for seven with 19 overs left after man-of-the-match Gareth Breese (three for 46) had combined with left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham (three for 33) and pacer Franklyn Rose (two for 36) to put the Jamaicans within range of their second victory.
The Jamaicans, who had dismissed Barbados for 213 in reply to their first innings total of 274 to lead by 61 runs, delayed their second innings declaration until half hour before lunch.
Even though they swiftly made inroads in the Barbados batting line-up, reducing them to 22 for two at lunch and 67 for four at tea, the confident Jamaicans let the Barbadians off the hook by dropping Floyd Reifer, who top-scored with 56 on 17 and Browne twice on 12 and 36.
In addition, they also had a confident appeal for a first slip catch against Marshall, taken by captain Robert Samuels off Cunningham's bowling turned down with four overs left.
Rose had started Barbados' woes when he dispatched Adrian Griffith (4) and Shawn Armstrong (0) in his first two overs.
Off-spinner Breese, who took a career-best six for 47 in Barbados' first innings and had match figures of nine for 93 runs, struck a crucial blow when he bowled opening batsman Philo Wallace around his legs for 15 just after lunch.
Cunningham caused more problems for Barbados by bowling the experienced Roland Holder for three.
Reifer, who was put down by Cunningham at mid-on off Rose, batted positively, striking eight fours in his 129-ball knock but after reaching his half-century essayed an injudicious swing at Breese and sliced a catch to substitute fielder Audley Sanson at backward point.
Reifer's dismissal tilted the game Jamaica's way as Breese struck again in his next over having Barbados' captain Ian Bradshaw (2) was brilliantly caught at slip by his opposite number Samuels.
