Dr Douglas collects top honour

PIONEER JAMAICAN urologist Professor the Hon. Dr. Lawson Douglas, O.J., C.D., was last night named the recipient of the 2000 Gleaner Honour Award of Excellence.

Professor Douglas is regarded in medical circles as the foremost expert on kidney transplantation and kidney disease treatment in the Caribbean and is an active fund-raiser on behalf of the kidney support foundation, which he founded. The citation presented to him at a Hilton Kingston Hotel banquet last night hailed him as having led a life that has been a "commitment to excellence and devoted service to (his) fellowman."

Receiving The Gleaner Award of Merit was Ambassador-at-Large Courtney Walsh, O.J., He was cited for his dignity, humility, sportsmanship and longevity while recently achieving the status of cricket's leading wicket-taker.

The lobby group Jamaicans for Justice received The Gleaner's Special Award for giving a new face to activism in Jamaica.
