Major arms find - Guns, ammunition seized in 'Jungle'

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE POLICE made a major arms find on Monday night in Arnett Gardens, South St. Andrew, and are seeking a former Jamaica Defence Force lance corporal for questioning about it.

The cache, discovered in an apartment in a high-rise building on Ninth Street, consists of: two AK-47 assault rifles and a Heckler and Koch VP70 pistol, all fitted with silencers, four rifle-propelled grenades, 118 7.62 calibre cartridges for AK-47 rifles and 16 additional 7.62 rounds for Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs).

Also, the police found 30 5.56 calibre cartridges for M-16 assault rifles, four cartridges for a .380 calibre pistol, eight blank cartridges, three 12-gauge shotgun cartridges, seven AK-47 magazines and an M-16 magazine, plus a pair of army fatigues and ammunition pouch.

The two rifles were equipped with telescopic lenses. The police said some of the extended magazines could hold 50 rounds each.

Several policemen said they were stunned by the find. One asked: "A wey dem bwoy get dem something ya man?"

Deputy Supt. Delroy Hewitt said the guns and explosives were found during one of their nightly operations in the South St. Andrew community, also known as "Concrete Jungle".

"We have arrested one person. She is 22-year-old Natalie Anderson of an Arnett Gardens address. We also have a warrant for the arrest of an ex-soldier, Gary Fitzgerald, alias 'Blacks'," said DSP Hewitt who is in charge of Operations in the West Kingston Police Division.

The police said the grenades could be fired from the AK-47 rifles and would have a range of 150 to 300 metres.
