GCB backs Hooper for captaincy

Hooper

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CANA -

THE Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) was urged at its annual general meeting on Sunday to support Carl Hooper for captain of the West Indies team.

At the meeting which re-elected president Chetram Singh and the entire GCB executive, the board was asked to give its full support to Hooper's return to the West Indies team and to support his appointment as captain of the regional side.

Hooper, who retired from international cricket during the Cable and Wireless home series against Australia in 1999, has come out of retirement and announced his availablity for the struggling West Indies team.

Last week, Antiguan journalist Tim Hector, and Terrence Holder, the Public Relations Officer of the GCB, called for Hooper's appointment as West Indies captain to replace Jimmy Adams.

West Indies, beaten 5-0 by Australia in their just-concluded Test series in Australia, host South Africa from March to May, and tour Zimbabwe this summer.
