AT EASE: Members of the victorious Immaculate Conception High celebrate their 28-9 win over Mona High in the Schools' Challenge Quiz Competition. - Winston Sill IT took the final segment to decide a winner when Immaculate Conception High School and Mona High squared off in the fifth match of the preliminary round of the 2001 School's Challenge Quiz.
The match started off slowly but picked up as both teams tried hard not allow either team to get too far ahead in the point standings. Mona High showed that they could hold their own even though they were not as highly rated as Immaculate. They answered the questions with confidence, even when they were incorrect.
Immaculate were composed and equally confident and by the end of the first section had managed to gain a one point lead with the score being 9-8.
The one minute speed section was equally competitive with both teams answering a equal number of questions correctly. The first minute ended with Immaculate still maintaining a one point lead. In the second minute Immaculate widened their lead to two points with Mona High answering only three questions correctly as opposed to four in the first minute.
By the end of the second round, Immaculate lead by three points, 20-17.
Both teams failed to capitalise on some easy questions in the first two rounds which would have made the match more exciting.
In the third section, Mona High proved to be quicker on the draw as they beat Immaculate to the buzzer continuously. However, they squandered any chance of winning by failing to answer correctly after pressing the buzzer. In this segment out of six questions they answered, only one was correct, a biology question. In the end, the number of incorrect questions saw them ending with only nine points.
Immaculate, on the other hand, answered four times correctly out of the five times they pressed the buzzer first. The match ended 28-9, which was not a true reflection of how close it was in the earlier segments.
The captains expressed their views at the end of the match. "I'm disappointed. It (the match) got away from us in the buzzer section. It was a fair match though and hopefully we do better next year even though I and most of my team mates won't be there," said Captain of Mona High, Trishawna Davis.
"We're very happy and proud of ourselves because we put a lot of hardwork into it. We are confident in ourselves and know we will do our best in the upcoming rounds," said Michelle Campbell, Captain of Immaculate Conception High.
