Seaga aims to resolve party dispute

Seaga

JAMAICA LABOUR Party (JLP) leader Edward Seaga met his former Cabinet Minister Pearnel Charles yesterday as he started a round of talks aimed at resolving the conflict over the North Central Clarendon candidacy.

Mr. Seaga is to meet another former cabinet colleague and the other contender, Dr. Percy Broderick, today. It is expected the party will issue a statement by weekend on the outcome of these talks.

Mr. Seaga's intervention followed the failure of Tuesday's meeting of a special JLP committee with both men to resolve their conflict over who should represent the party in North Central Clarendon.

That meeting concluded prematurely, to allow Mr. Charles to visit his wife who was in hospital following an accident last week.

Dr. Broderick has requested the leadership conduct consultations with delegates in the constituency as to who they wish to represent the party in the next general election. Mr. Charles was selected as the caretaker/candidate for the constituency at last year's annual conference, but Dr. Broderick's supporters claim they were barred from the meeting.

North Central Clarendon is considered a must win seat for the JLP in the event of an early general election. It is represented by the PNP's George Lyn but was represented by Dr. Broderick between 1972 and 1989 and was lost by Mr. Charles in 1997.
