SYDNEY, (Reuters):
WEST Indies captain Jimmy Adams was frustrated while counterpart Heath Streak reflected on a "dream day" after Zimbabwe scored a remarkable 47-run win in their triangular series one-dayer yesterday.
Zimbabwe, sent in to bat by Adams, were all out for 138 off 47.2 overs. In reply, West Indies batted atrociously, sliding to 31-8 before eventually succumbing for 91 all out off 31.5 overs.
"That wicket called for application and patience from both sides and that is where we let ourselves down again," Adams said.
"Zimbabwe bowled well but we didn't show enough application to get the job done.
"It's frustrating from the point of view that we're not consistent in our cricket.
"It would be nice to have a game where we batted well, bowled well and fielded well but that hasn't happened on tour for a very, very long time - and I'm speaking about years."
West Indies fielded well, a rarity on this tour, as Cameron Cuffy (4-24) and Laurie Williams (3-24) put their team in sight of a likely victory, giving their batsmen a small total to chase. But it was not to be.
Streak was man of the match, making the highest score of the game with his 45 and then taking four for eight off eight overs.
It was Zimbabwe's first win from three attempts in the series while West Indies have one victory from five matches. Australia are undefeated in four games.
Adams, who averaged only 18.88 in West Indies' 5-0 Test series loss to Australia, is under pressure to retain the captaincy for the home series against South Africa in March.
The left-hander scored 22, sharing a 60-run, ninth-wicket partnership with tailender Nixon McLean who was unbeaten on 40.
West Indies at least managed to avoid the lowest-ever score in limited overs internationals, 43 by Pakistan v West Indies in Cape Town in 1993.
It was West Indies' second-lowest total, however, just beating their 87 against Australia in Sydney in December 1992.
For Zimbabwe, beaten by Australian Country XI by 51 runs last week and humiliated by eight wickets by Australia on Sunday, the victory brought new hope of making the finals in the series.
"It was one of those dream days where all the nicks went to hand and the lbws were given," Streak said.
