Samuels, Lara give West Indies hope

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) --

THE West Indies moved back into second place in the tri-series limited-overs tournament yesterday, beating Zimbabwe by 77 runs.

After a dismal start, Brian Lara and Marlon Samuels led a West Indies comeback which took the team to 235-6 before heavy rain ended their innings after 47 overs.

Zimbabwe needed to score 253 from 47 overs to win the match under the Duckworth-Lewis System, but were all out for 175 in 40.2 overs.

The win gives the West Indies four points from six matches while Zimbabwe have two from four matches. Australia lead the tournament with four consecutive wins for eight points.

Lara (70 runs, 96 balls) and Samuels (68, 98), came together with the score at 16 for two in the sixth over after openers Sherwin Campbell and Daren Ganga fell cheaply.

Lara and Samuels set up the West Indies innings with a 133-run stand, helped by some poor attempts at catching by the Zimbabwe fieldsmen. Lara was dropped by Gavin Rennie at midwicket on 10 and Alistair Campbell at first slip when on 21.

Samuels was also the beneficiary of a poor catching attempt, by Stuart Carlisle, who had plenty of time to get under a skied shot to long-on, but initially ran forward instead of backward and dropped his one-handed attempt, which ran over the boundary to take Samuels from 47 to 51.

Of the seven bowlers used, only captain Heath Streak posed any great danger to the batsmen, taking three for 27 off eight full, straight overs, including the wickets of Campbell, Lara and Ricardo Powell.

Left-arm spinner Dirk Viljeon was the only other wicket-taker, having Samuels caught behind with the two other wickets falling to runouts.
