Community Web for Kingston

The Go-Local project being undertaken by The Gleaner Company in conjunction with The Jamaica National Building Society and Sangster's Book Stores will launch the first in the series of its community Web sites on Tuesday of this week. First to go live is the Kingston site, and the public can access this at www.go-kingston.com <http://www.go-kingston.com>

Kingston, as capital city and commercial centre, easily accommodates extremes -- poverty and wealth, shanties and posh houses -- and quite often, the positive happenings of everyday life get relegated to the realms of the insignificant.

Go-kingston.com, therefore, showcases local news and educational highlights with features on various schools in the city; NGOs who do a whole lot of good but who often work behind the scenes are spotlighted with a view to heightening public awareness and soliciting support; upcoming events and community notices are listed on the Web calendar as well as on a schedule titled "what's happening", the latter conveniently located on the front page of the site.

By allowing individuals to put up their own notices of upcoming events and community happenings on the Web calendar, the site lends itself to communal interaction via the Web.

Dynamic and interactive, Go-kingston.com gives community members a chance to air local issues and publicise local happenings and events, while simultaneously promoting community development. From Hannah Town and Tivoli in Kingston's inner city to the hills of St. Andrew and intermediate townships, community members are encouraged to showcase the positive developments in their different locations and participate in online discussions which are pitched both at the municipal and national levels.

Community members can now participate by sending information and articles to news@go-localjamaica.com mail to:
