Video piracy rampant

VIDEO PIRACY in Jamaica continues, even in the face of recent regulations prohibiting such action.

According to a release from Palace Amusement Company, the highly anticipated blockbusters, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Finding Forrester, are being pirated and sold on video.

Crouching Tiger won this year's Golden Globe Award for Best Director and recently earned 10 Academy Awards nominations, including Directing and Best Picture.

Managing director of Palace Amusement, Douglas Graham said: "We have received reports that illegal copies of these films are already in certain video shops in Jamaica. Palace Amusement has the theatrical rights to these films in Jamaica and I am issuing a strong warning to the vendors of these tapes and to potential customers, that these tapes are illegal. It is against the law to have copies in your possession."

Mr. Graham said operators had an obligation to respect and abide by the law and to ensure that they observe established procedure and scheduling arrangements, so that all entities within the motion picture industry can earn a livelihood.

Jamaica has been placed on a 301 Priority Watch List by the US State Department, which means that sanctions can be imposed at any time, if Jamaicans continue to breach copyright laws.
