Fed Cup kicks off today

Dawes... missing in action.

THE 2001 Federation Cup Knockout competition gets going today with 13 matches across the island.

The competition which is this year jointly-sponsored by the Jamaica National Building Society and the Jamaica Football Federation will start with parish champions in their respective knockout competitions and 12 A League teams heading into the fray.

National Premier League teams have received a bye for this round in addition to Village United who ended 2000 as leaders in the A League. A feature of the knockout format are the upsets by teams in lower leagues but one side which should get by the first round is A League leaders Galaxy who will go up against Hedonism II at Green Island High in Hanover.

Though they will be playing without national midfielder and captain Christopher Dawes and national first-string goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and national forward Ray Graham, they should have enough quality to beat less fancied Hedonism II.

Out of favour national midfielder Winston Griffiths will be rested but in forwards Cheddi Grant, Marciano Benjamin and Clifton Cole they should have enough fire power to advance to round two.
