KINGSTON'S Queen's High school defeated St. Catherine's Johnathan Grant High 36-17 on Tuesday night in the penultimate match of the first round of the School's Challenge Quiz, 2001 competition.

The Queen's team: Captain Althea Middleton, Jodi-ann McLean, Shaan Spence and Christin Senior, proved too much for their opponents who fought as hard as they were able.

Early in the match the Queen's school made their intentions clear, answering each question with precision. This segment ended with Queen's on 10 points and Johnathan Grant on six.

In the second segment Queen's threw down the gaunlet leaving their opponents bewildered. Johnathan Grant seemed to lose their spirit as they failed to answer a number of questions, enabling Queens to double the lead they had at the end of segment one. The second segment ended 26-11.

Johnathan Grant with captain Shawn Henry, Joseph Tulloch, Shamara Brown and Dane Young, attempted to make a comeback in section three, but it was too little too late.

Queen's had completed their mission and they were thrilled.

"We're happy with our win, we put a lot of work into it and could have capitalised on some questions, but God willing we won and are very happy," winning captain Althea Middleton said after the match, adding that they were looking forward to round one.

Oneil Nelson, the losing coach, bla-med the lack of resources to study at his school, for the team's poor performance.

He, however, noted that the next time Johnathan will try and give a better account of themselves.

"Next time we will be winning regardless of who our opponents will be," he said. TONIGHT: Guy's Hill High plays Wolmer's Girls school in the final preliminary round match.
