MORE than 4,000 athletes from high, primary, all-age and preparatory schools, clubs and institutions will compete in this weekend's 26th renewal of the popular Gibson Relays.

The one-day relay carnival which kicks off at 9.45 a.m. on Saturday has attracted the cream of the island's junior athletes from 78 boys and 78 girls high school teams.

Among those expected to compete are world junior sprint champion Veronica Campbell of Vere Technical, St, Jago's Melaine Walker who impressed in the 100 metres hurdles at the National Field Events Championships last Saturday, Omar Brown, the defending Class 1 100 metres champion at Boys Championships and the impressive Holmwood Technical team which includes 400m aces Sheryl Morgan and Anneisha McLaughlin.

A number of top local-based seniors will also compete for men's and women's clubs and institutions.

Organising committee member Winston Ulett said yesterday that in addition to the relay races there will be individual competition over 100m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m, long jump, high jump and pole vault. The Relays' organisers are also awaiting confirmation from Caribbean teams in Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Kitts.

Registration for the meet will be conducted inside the National Arena from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The finals begin at 5 p.m. with the last event scheduled for 9.15.
