HEALTH TRENDS - Brisk and steady walking

A STUDY of 30 middle-aged women found that brisk 30-minute walks burned more calories than three 10-minute walks throughout the day. The researchers at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention published their report in the January issue of Medicine & Science in Sports &

Exercise and said that the caloric difference could mean a five-pound difference in weight loss each year. The researchers measured the caloric expenditure of two groups of women over three days and found that those in the group walking continuously burned 60 more calories each day.

Exercise and ovarian cancer

IT APPEARS that women can preserve their reproductive health with regular workouts. A study by the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburg indicates that women who regularly engage in physical activities had a much lower incidence of ovarian cancer compared to women who exercise much less. The researchers used data from a population-based case-control study of women. They concluded that leisure-time physical activity is associated with reduced occurrence of epithelial ovarian cancer. Many studies shown a link between regular exercise and a reduced risk for several types of cancers.

Alzheimer's and exercise

RESEARCHERS AT Mayo Clinic are recommending exercise for persons with Alzheimer's. They say that there are many well-documented evidence of the benefits of exercise for these patients. Exercise can positively impact the health and well-being of an Alzheimer's patient by improving their energy, circulation, stamina, mood and sleep hygiene. The experts also say that depending on the type of exercise and intensity, exercise can help sustain strength, flexibility and balance, thereby lessening the risk of serious injury if the patient with Alzheimer's should fall.

Raise your metabolism

IT'S A good idea to rev up your metabolism if losing weight is your game and exercise is one of the best ways to improve metabolic rate. Exercise, especially strength training will help you develop muscle mass which not only improve metabolic rate but helps the body to burn more fat.

The experts also recommend that instead of starving all day and then feasting on a large meal, you should eat frequent but small balanced meals throughout the day. They recommend for instance, four to six small meals each day instead to speed up the metabolism.
