Letter of the Day Amidst fear, there's hope
THE EDITOR, Madam: I THOUGHT my country was hopeless. In the past two days, I have pronounced three people dead, victims of violent senseless crimes. The images of their faces and their blood haunt my mind daily. I lived in fear that perhaps one day I might, like them, leave home only to show up as a corpse at the portals of the hospital gate. Today, my fears partly came true. As I journeyed with my mother to the store, our car suddenly stopped, powerless, in the middle of traffic at the foot of Stony Hill. There we were, two helpless women, stranded, at night, perfect victims. Panic and fear inundated our minds, the nameless dead faces loomed again before my eyes. Suddenly, a car filled with men stopped. We prepared for the worst but they stopped to help! Then another car stopped followed by a wrecker and a van. Within minutes, we were escorted to the side of the road and a sea of heads was beneath our car's bonnet. In no time, we were up and running, with the assistance of an electrician, an engineer, a mechanic and a public notary among others. The whole episode has left me in shock. There is hope here. No, much more than hope. The genuine spirit of our people still burns brightly in their hearts. Not every person you see is trying to maim or rob you. People in this country still do care. Jamaicans, let us not give up on ourselves. I am etc., Dr MONIQUE FORD E-mail: squique@yahoo.com Via Go-Jamaica
