Letter of the Day A national disgrace

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON WEDNESDAY February 28, 2001, Jamaica won, but we also lost. Horace Burrell, the JFF president, a soldier I might add, turned the National Stadium into a 'War Zone', indeed a lawless town. People scaling walls at will, pushing, robbing, and the opening of exit gates by patrons, were the order of the day at the 'Office'.

The stadium was one jampacked sardine can, but while the Reggae Boyz need funds, it cannot be at the price of our fellow Jamaicans. There obviously wasn't any proper planning for a game of this magnitude and clearly no proper security arrangements.

It was a national disgrace; however, since I am a diehard football fan I will suggest to Mr. Burrell the following:

1. Use the JDF to circle the Stadium before the game

2. Sell only 31,000 tickets (please!)

3. Open gates very early (7:00 am!)

4. Allow game to be shown live if tickets are sold out.

I suggest these because I don't want to lose our home advantage.

I am etc.,

MEGEL R. BARKER
