Better solutions needed for narco problem
THE EDITOR, Sir: RE JAMAICA passing the US Exam: Who made the US the sole certification body of illegal drug wars? As I know it, the 1988 UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, simply charges countries to meet the stated goals and objectives of the Convention to eradicate the growing of narcotic drugs and hence the supply. I would think that by closely working with all the major narcotic drug demand countries, such as the US, constant remedies could be implemented without degrading respective countries to wait hand and foot on the US, to hope and beg, that they will certify us, so that the generous giving of aid and other well-deserving gifts could be received. If no certification then we will be punished. It was only three weeks ago, that in a meeting with the Mexican President, the President of the United States lamented that the problem of narcotic drug use was not with the supplier of drugs, but rather with those that demand it. Can the Government of Jamaica band with the 20 countries that receive the kindly US drug 'certification', to demand and develop a more objective replacement policy that would seek to identify the real drug problem, which not only affects the US, but all of us? Our families, community, churches and country owe it to the next generation for better and more respectful solutions.
