JAMAICA'S DIRECTOR of Social Security in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Faith Innerarity, has welcomed as significant, her being selected to chair the 39th session of the United Nations (UN) Nations Commission Commision for Social Development, held between February 13 and March 2.
Mrs. Innerarity, who has been working with the Commission since 1996, said she was satisfied that her efforts had resulted in very positive feedback from delegations, and that important decisions were adopted for further actions on social development globally.
Speaking from the Jamaica Mission in New York, she said that "over the past five years there had been a number of de-liberations on issues that had arisen at the World Summit for Social Development" in Cop-enhagen, Denmark.
She said this session's priority theme, "Enhancing Social Pro-tection and Vulnerability in the Globalising World", represented another critical issue that was discussed by the Commission.
Mrs. Innerarity explained that while the concept of social protection was "as old as society", it had now become increasingly urgent, as there was more reliance on market-driven strategies to guide economic affairs.
She stressed that the sub-theme of the session, "The role of voluntarism in the promotion of social development" was equally important, particularly in the current International Year, which was intended to recognise the role of volunteers and civil society in social protection and other areas of social development.
