Skipper devotes win to Walsh

Walsh

JAMAICA'S skipper Jimmy Adams, who led his team to the Busta International Shield over Guyana at Sabina Park yesterday, said the win was dedicated to fast bowler Courtney Walsh.

After accepting the winners' cheque valued at US$10,000 and the silverware, Adams declared "it was a good way for his team to finish the season and we dedicate this game to Courtney Walsh who might have played his last game for Jamaica".

"We have a few players that were a bit tired," Adams said of the Jamaicans toil on the final day. "Wavell Hinds said he wanted to bat down the order because he was struggling a bit and we decided to give (Keith) Hibbert a chance to bat up the order because he is a very talented youngster and he responded well."

However, Adams said the real credit must be given to his bowlers as he thought their support was crucial to the team's supremacy.

"It was a really good batting wicket and I must give credit to the bowlers for really sticking it out to get a good batting line up all out for under 300 runs. I think it was a magnificent effort. They stuck to it and I think we got what we deserved.

"The wicket was flat so I think it was likely that if both teams batted well you would only get a one innings game which is the way it turned out," added the skipper.

Guyana and new West Indies skipper Carl Hooper said he was disappointed not to take home any trophies this season but then looked ahead to the looming clash with South Africa.

"I have never encountered any problems captaining teams before. The important thing is to try and get the team to play as a team and to be united as one when on the field regardless of the results," he said.

Hooper was named the top Caribbean batsmen ahead of Jamaica's Chris Gayle. He also collected an award for the top Caribbean all rounder.
