THE EDITOR, Sir:I HAVE known Michael Holding for the past 40 years. During that time he has become through his deeds and words my own personal hero. In fact whenever I go anywhere and I am greeted by Michael Holding, the salutation from him becomes my high point for the evening.
I am particularly proud of the stand that Mr. Holding has taken in respect of the appointment of Mr. Carl Hooper as captain of the West Indies Cricket Team. Mr. Holding has enunciated a principle that I have tried and failed to pass on to members of the media and most importantly the leaders of our society.
As West Indian people we need to set up as heroes, those, whose actions warrant such adulation. It has always been my belief that the actions of any human being are governed by the cost/benefit of his actions. If a human being understands what the cost of his action is, unless he is mentally disabled, that action will not be performed.
I give as an example, a human being who has learnt that to make contact with an open flame will result in a burn which is painful and disabling. The human being quickly learns and understands that whenever his fingers/body come in contact with an open flame what the result will be. He therefore, tries as best as possible to stay away from activities that will result in his finger/body coming in contact with an open flame. When contact is made, no 'bly' or consideration with regards to his parents, colour, or economic circumstances will alter the effect of the flame.
As a people we are struggling to understand that we must be responsible for our actions and we also have a responsibility to our children in regards to who we portray as leaders.
I wish Mr. Carl Hooper well, I wish West Indies team well. My fervent hope is that Mr. Holding's action will grab our decision-makers by the throat and force them to sit down and review decisions which will only result in our embarrassment as a proud people.
I am, etc.,
