Shaggy to celebrate successes here

Shaggy

International star Shaggy is the only Jamaican artiste to have sold six million records, while still active on the music scene.

He could have chosen anywhere in the world to stage the official celebration of his success, but he has decided to do so in Jamaica.

A Platinum Party is planned for Saturday, March 17 at James Bond Beach, in Oracabessa, St. Mary.

Although he'll be specially inviting persons, some tickets will also be made available to the general public.

Two thousand persons will be invited, while 500 tickets will be made available to the public at $3,000 a piece. They go on sale tomorrow at various locations and producer of the event, Solid Agency, is anticipating a good response.

Proceeds from the sale of the 500 tickets will be donated to the Bustamante Hospital for Children, a charity Shaggy has adopted and to which he made a donation of US$25,000 on Wednesday.

The Platinum Party has been endorsed by music mogul Chris Blackwell. It will feature a number of other artistes, including Lady Saw, Rayvon, Brian and Tony Gold, Prince Midas, Marsha, Baby Cham and Rude.

The single It Wasn't Me from the Hot Shot album hit the top of the Billboard charts and another single Angel is presently at the No. 5 spot.

Shaggy has been the charm of American television in recent weeks, appearing on a number of network programmes like Regis Live, David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, Jay Leno, Politically Incorrect, Rosie O'Donnell, E Television and others.

"We are saving the Oprah Show for last," his manager Robert Livingston told Showbiz.

For the third time, Shaggy has debuted at the top of the British charts. It Wasn't Me hit the top last week, following on Oh Carolina the single which brought him to fame.

Shaggy appeared on 'Top of the Pops' live from New York since the record hit the British charts.

Overall, Shaggy has had seven top 10 hits on the British charts. Interestingly, he has still not undertaken a major tour of Europe.

"We have done dates in bits and pieces all over, but we have never done a full tour. We want to get that organised," said Livingston.

Shaggy is set to undertake a major tour of the United States with the Backstreet Boys starting June 16.
