THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM not a fan of Jamaican politicians but I am forced to give credit to Minister Paulwell for spearheading the end of Cable and Wireless' monopoly in this country. For long Cable and Wireless has taken advantage of the Jamaican public. For example, strange things happen to our bills, we are paying for calls to areas that some of us don't know exist; you pick up your phone to make a call and someone is on your line, etc.
Not to mention the cellular service! We pay monthly rental for cellular service, from which we sometimes get no service. What is the explanation? The system is overloaded (they are trying to corner the market before the competition comes in, but have they never heard 'craven choke puppy'?).
Recently, and this was nothing short of being duped, while trying to switch from an analogue to a digital phone, I ended up paying for an existing account as if I was a new customer.
In short, the company, in spite of having a customer service section, rarely displays any regard for customers. We pay for service which we are not getting. However, 'redemption draweth nigh'. Cable and Wireless should not fool themselves into thinking that persons won't change service when the competition comes, even if the rates are higher. I am one who plans to do just that. Maybe I will be 'swapping black dog for monkey', but Cable and Wireless has had many opportunities to cater to the needs of the Jamaica customer and has not made use of the years they have been in this country. I will allow another company to abuse me, Cable and Wireless has been doing it for too long!
I am etc.,
