Tourism group offers study grant

THE CARIBBEAN Tourism Organisation (CTO) is offering study grants for 2001 through its foundation in the amount of US$500 - US$2,500 to citizens of member countries.

Grants are intended for persons pursuing any post-secondary level of studies in the tourism/hospitality sector at the certificate, diploma or degree level from June 2001 onwards.

Grants are also being offered to persons who are currently working in the tourism/hospitality sector or for whom having a second language would be an important asset in their job, and who genuinely want to improve their language proficiency in English, French or Spanish through formal, intensive language training programmes, preferably in an English, French or Spanish-speaking country in the Caribbean. Applicants should seek to demonstrate the need for support.

The foundation was established in May 1997 and its main purpose is to assist in the development of a cadre of highly skilled Caribbean tourism professionals.

Fundraising and other support for the study grants have been supplied by American Airlines, American Express, Architectural Digest - through a partnership with the World Studio Foun-dation, Travel Agent Magazine, CTO Chapters and various fundraising events of the CTO.

Application forms and related information can be obtained from the Jamaica Tourist Board offices islandwide. Interested applicants can also apply on line using CTO's website. The address is www.caribtourism.com. Before an award can be made, candidates should have proof of acceptance in the programme of studies they wish to pursue.

The deadline for applications is April 27, 2001. The 2001 awardees will be announced by May 2001 the latest. Short-listed applicants are required to do an interview.
