THE EDITOR, Sir:
OVER THE years, we as Jamaicans have displayed a nonchalant attitude to the plight of our children and their future. From educational concerns to the effect of crime and abuse on children have caused remedial programmes to be started by different organisations to deal effectively with those concerns with applicable solutions and building blocks.
The churches, in being fore-runners of schools, community groups and hospitals, have long sought to place healthy and wholesome directions to our youths and their families. Much of the success, or lack of success however, comes from the support the public and private bodies give to ensure that these building blocks continue.
I am pleased, not only as a former employee, but also as a parent, to see one such private organisation, Texaco Caribbean Inc., take such a leadership role, to provide the 'street children' with marketable skills for their future. All praise to the employees and employers of Texaco to take such a bold step which will hopefully challenge other notable companies to step into the fray and ensure that our future is really built around the 'love thy neighbour' message.
May this action highlight what is right with Jamaica.
I am etc.,
