On the community page this week, the NGO feature focuses on The Association of Development Agencies.
An umbrella organisation for 13 groups and 2 individuals, the ADA began operation in 1985 and a full time secretariat was set up in 1986. Co-ordinator Simeon Robinson explains that the work of the ADA takes the organisation into policy analysis and advocacy at the governmental level. What this means is that the ADA, on behalf of its members, examines policy issues being pursued by government in accordance with international organisations such as the IMF and WTO, and then lobbies the government if these policies are deemed to be inimical to social development and social justice.
Sistren Theatre Collective, The Caribbean Conference of Churches, Combined Disabilities Association, Habitat for Humanity and Social Action Centre are some of the member groups of ADA. According to Robinson, the policies pursued by government affect every aspect of the society including health care, sanitation and housing. The organisation therefore acts as an advocate or voice for these organisations, some of which work closely with the community and have to deal with the negative side effects of governmental policies.
