A prisoner of C&W

THE EDITOR, Sir:

HELP! I am a prisoner and beg you to take note of my piteous plight. It is almost a week now since Cable and Wireless (C&W) put me under house arrest and the situation seems likely to continue indefinitely unless stout-hearted citizens rally to my support.

As we speak I am sitting here waiting for a C&W technician to arrive to fix my telephone line. The matter was reported last week to the relevant department and on Sunday, after the football game, a rather amiable technician rolled up in a C&W van. He diagnosed the matter and said it would be fixed the next day. The next day promptly at the time he said he would return the van arrived filling me with admiration for C&W's efficient repair delivery system. The technician turned out to be different from the one who came the day before and knew nothing about him.

He was extremely professional however and zealously examined various boxes, lines and instruments and promised to have the problem fixed by the next day. The next day my helper was at home all day, but we heard nothing else from C&W. That was Tuesday. Since then I have been assured each day that technicians have been assigned to fix my phone line that day.

As a result I have been staying at home every day to facilitate the entry of one of these technicians who so far, however, have not appeared. I even booked an appointment for this morning, Friday, between 9 a.m. and 11 am, and it is now noon and he still hasn't appeared. When I called the young lady in Customer Assistance to complain that no one had come despite her many assurances, she suddenly countered by saying: "But what were you promised? Were you actually assured that this would have been accomplished by 11 a.m.? Did we not say between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.?" She would make a good politician, I thought, the previous day her voice had dripped with honey as she made her promises.

Nevertheless, I hasten to add that all the C&W employees I've had to deal with, and I know many of them by name now, have been pleasant in the extreme. Natalie, Dahlia, Winsome and Aloysius of the Repair Dept, big up!

Not to digress, this intolerable situation has been going on for the last five days. I dare not leave my house. From time to time I make quick forays to Liguanea for food and drink. Today I have an invitation to go to Lime Cay for lunch with a visiting friend; I however, will have to turn down this delightful option as I have to wait for the C&W technician! I am beseeching the public's intervention on humanitarian grounds. I am also seeking help in establishing a Victims of Cable and Wireless Support Group.

I am, etc.,

ANNIE PAUL
