BRIDGEPORT Comprehen-sive won the Captain's Bakery Trophy for the second time when they defeated first time finalists St. Jago High 3-2 in the Captain's Bakery/Schoolgirls football final at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.
In the play off for third place Meadowbrook clipped Tivoli Comprehensive 3-2 on penalty kicks. The teams had played to a 1-1 draw in extra time and sudden death.
Both teams entered the final unbeaten as earlier in the week Bridgeport turned back Meadowbrook 4-2 and St. Jago stopped Tivoli 3-0 in semi-final action.
Undoubtedly, the two best teams in competition, boasting several National Under 19 invitees, the large crowd was not disappointed as both teams started off at a good pace.
Bridgeport who captured the trophy two years ago, however, looked the more relaxed and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 10th minute. After eluding several players, Sophia Dixon was brought down inside the area by St. Jago centre half and captain Karlene Ellis. Goalkeeper Nickeisha Smith, a national player, made no mistake from the penalty spot.
For the remainder of the half Bridgeport took control of the game through Denise Duncan, Keisha Smith and Dixon.
They increased their lead in the 26th minute when centre half Michelle Depass wormed her way into the St. Jago penalty area and kicked past the goalkeeper.
Twelve minutes into the second half Bridgeport went 3-0 up when St. Jago keeper Khaliel Beckford dived over a ball from a tame kick from Keisha Smith.
St. Jago fought back strongly in the final 15 minutes and pulled back a goal when Keane Shae Thomas curled a free kick past the Bridgeport goalkeeper.
With time running out, St. Jago reduced the deficit once again as Dunn scored after a fine solo run.
