A QUICK double by midfielder Daniel Shaw led the Corporate Area's Harbour View to the national knockout title -- the JNBS Federation Cup -- as they thrashed MoBay's Wadadah 3-0 in the final at Falmouth's Elletson Wakeland Community Centre yesterday.
Besides the Federation Cup, Harbour View earned $250,000, while Wadadah took the runners-up cash award of $175,000.
Shaw scored in the 90th minute and injury time, to add to a 29th minute goal netted by forward Shawn Henry, which had given the east Kingston team an early lead as they maintained their strangle-hold on Wadadah by beating them for the third time in four meetings this season. The other ended in a draw.
Henry netted from a melee, while Shaw made perfect finishes after being fed with through passes, to kill off any hopes the Montego Bay team might have had of forcing the game into extra-time.
That, too, could have been the case had the Montegonians not squandered a glorious opportunity to score an equaliser only three minutes after conceding a goal in the first half. Striker Thomas Grant was brought down in the 18-yard box and the referee awarded a penalty.
However, it was not to be Wadadah's day as midfielder Garth Boota missed from the spot.
Harbour View did not mind as they kept a clean sheet to the end to capture their second title in a week, as the previous Sunday they beat defending champions Constant Spring 3-1 to lift the KSAFA Jackie Bell KO title in the final at the National Stadium.
Henry was also on target in the Jackie Bell KO final, where his team's other goals were scored by Ali Rose and midfield general Jermaine Hue, whose goal knocked over Arnett Gardens 1-0 when both teams met in the Federation Cup semi-final midweek.
On that day, Wadadah beat Westmoreland's Reno on penalties to book their ticket to the final.
They were hoping to make the best of the chance to win a cup yesterday, in an effort to add a bit of glow to a rather disappointing season in which they are languishing near bottom in the National Premier League and fighting to stave off relegation.
Harbour View, the reigning champions, have no such worry and are handily placed to retain their title as they have already secured a place in the semi-finals, even with four rounds to play.
Yesterday's win marked the third time that Harbour View were winning the coveted title and an obviously elated Peter Cargill, their coach, said they played in a unified manner. He added that Shaw was outstanding today but on any given day any player can be the outstanding figure.
Wadadah's coach, Anthony "Follies" Williams, blamed the loss squarely on the poor physical condition of his team. He noted that the team hardly trains, and any development of fitness is left to matches.
