Fun or disrespect?

Lady Saw

By Ingrid Brown, Staff Reporter

It may be done in jest, it may be deliberate, but one thing is clear - some entertainers are upset about the use of their names by colleagues in songs.

Lyrics like 'Tanya Stephens' foot big like Captain Bakery bread', 'Lady G have a belly problem', 'Bounty Killer too stiff' etc, are said to be affecting the relationship between artistes.

Some entertainers say there is a time and place for these types of lyrics and they should be taken as good natured fun. On the other hand there are those entertainers who believe it has gone too far and has become personal.

Lady Saw is one artiste that is hopping mad about the use of her name in a song. In General B's, The Business, mention is made that she cannot have any children.

"I am very offended about it to the max. Me did start to answer back but when me think about it me decided that me not stooping to their level," Lady Saw told THE STAR.

She said some of these songs are done in good humour but there are times when these artistes get too personal.

"Some of them are really personal and stepping over the line and saying things that people shouldn't think of saying."

She refuted the suggestion that she can't have any children.

"If they want they can go to my doctor to see that I am quite alright. Anyway I just realise that a man want to eat a food and this is the only lyrics that they know," she said.

General B told THE STAR that apart from Lady Saw no other artistes were offended by his song. Other artistes such as Ghost, Zebra and Beenie Man were also mentioned in the song.

The deejay said his song should not be taken that seriously. He said the public likes these types of songs but they should not be overdone. "The people like these songs just like how they like everything else but there is a season for everything," he said.

In some cases, the deejay said, artistes used these songs to deliberately hit out at other artistes. That, he said, he was against.

He recently recorded another song A Lie which mentions several artistes' names. He said that will be the last song like that for the time being.

He admits that the public likes these types of songs but that they should not be overdone. "The people like these songs just like how they like everything else but there is a season for everything," he said.

General Degree, an artiste known for his comical lyrics says he has never done any of those songs and has no intentions to. "I really don't know if they are doing it to disrespect each other or if it is just for fun, but I don't do it," he told THE STAR.

He says his name has been used but he was not upset because of the way it was done. "As long as they don't say something personal about me I don't have a problem," he said referring to one of Captain Barkey's song which says, 'Degree a gwaan like granny in a bed'. "A song like that no really bother me," he said.

Captain Barkey told THE STAR there are times when artistes can overlook these songs. On the other hand however he says there are instances when these lyrics go too far. "If someone name is called and it is not defaming their character then that is okay, but when they go as far as to say someone is gay then I don't support those things," said Barkey.
