Munro College - Dennis Coke
MUNRO College booked their place in the quarterfinals of the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz Competition with a well fought 24-17 victory over Meadowbrook in the latest match of the competition.
Meadowbrook went ahead 3-1 in the first two minutes of the first segment. The teams seemed perplexed by the difficult questions thrown at them.
However, Munro, ranked as one of the favourites, took the lead by the end of the first section and never looked back. The section ended 8-5.
Munro's Captain Alrick Mullings explained the reason for their slow start. "We were just getting in the groove of the match and we wanted to keep our composure all the way through so that was the main reason for the slow start," he said.
Section Two started slowly with both teams squandering a chance to cement their hold on the match. Meadowbrook's chance of coming back in the match all but went through the door in this segment. After the end of the first minute they had failed to answer any of the questions correctly. Munro only managed to answer one question correctly.
The second minute saw an improvement in the performances of the teams and by the end of the section, the score read Munro 18, Meadowbrook 11.
Meadowbrook's Captain, Tricia Smith, said her team were thrown off . "The unfamiliar questions affected us somewhat and some things are just inexplicable," she said.
The third segment started at a faster pace than the previous sections as the teams looked set on gaining a quarterfinal berth. However, it was Munro that dominated the section.
Meadowbrook fought valiantly and at one stage showed that Munro could have been beaten when they answered several questions correctly. However, time was too short for Meadowbrook to steal a victory.
Mullings said they will be working hard to ensure victory over their next opponents. "We think we can be successful over our next opponents. With a bit more practice we feel we can be successful against them," he said.
Tricia was graceful in defeat. "We felt anything was possible, Munro is a good team so we didn't underestimate them," she said.
Tonight's match will see St. Jago High going up against Old Harbour High.
