Elephant Man and Frisco Kid THE FINALS of Richie B's 'Mix Masters in Motion' at the Skateland Entertainment Centre, Half-Way Tree last Saturday was successful, based on the vibes and the number of artistes in attendance. While he did not get a full house, there was a reasonably large crowd on hand to witness the spectacle.
Millennium Disco came out on top of rival Changes with a very creative display of selecting and a good supply of the appropriate banter. Congratulations are certainly in order for the Millennium Disco.
We left before the stage show reached its high point. We did hear the start of Paul Elliott's set and he did sound as if he had got off to a good jump.
The Mighty Stone Love Movement and the impressive Renaissance were on hand to provide a steady supply of music. They were joined by Suzie Q, who is making a steady comeback to the local media and dancehall scene, after a few years' absence.
Baby Cham, Buju Banton, Tanto Metro and Devonte and Bling Dawg were just a few of the artistes who could be seen backstage waiting to perform. There was clearly quite a bit of traffic which moved between Skateland and Ken Wright Pier in Portland.
There were those who came early to Skateland with the intention to go onto Portland and others did the reverse. Popular entertainer Louie Culture, the old Gangalee, staged the event in Portland.
Not only was the action from the 'mix masters' event carried live on local radio, but the audio and video were streamed live by Downsound, which has been making quite an effort to promote Jamaican music.
Speaking of Downsound, the label has a rhythm currently making the rounds, called Double Ugly. The rhythm has a number of popular dancehall acts strutting their stuff, including Elephant Man, Frisco Kid and Harry Toddler. It also has a number of tracks from some upcoming acts including Xsytment, Tally Phoenix and Mr. Donx, the last of whom has a number Hee Haw which is getting some airplay.
Moments Nightclub to reopen
THE SHUTTERS came down on Moments nightclub, Clarendon, for a few weeks to effect repairs and to ensure that certain requirements for the effective running of the facilities were in place.
The operators intend to reopen on Saturday, April 14, with a programme, dubbed 'Easter Fiesta' which will run through Easter Monday.
Ghandi's
interview
WHAT A fabulous interview Ian Boyne had with Ramojan Ghandi, the grandson of Mohandas Ghandi, the great son of Mahatma of India. Now Mohandas Ghandi is considered one of the greatest leaders of all time.
His probing questions are certainly the basis for a first-class programme. And his recent interview with Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who led the fight on behalf of a woman's right to chose in the famous Roe vs. Wade case, is a classic.
