Chi-chi song a no-no

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE enjoyed carnival for many, many years. It has been a safe place of fun and frolic. I have attended every carnival event held at Mas Camp on Oxford Road and encourage others to do the same. The place is safe and drug-free.

The organisers of this Mas Camp have over the years gained a reputation of being family-oriented and as such young children go to this camp to my delight. The atmosphere created by the music and fun-loving persons has encouraged me that there is still hope.

I was extremely disturbed on Friday night 30th March, 2001 at the Oxford Road Mas Camp. To my amazement the Chi-Chi song was played. I was horrified to find that such a tune inciting violence could be played there. This so-called song has no place in carnival. It is not a genre of music which is in tune with other carnival music. Also to bring violence into carnival is a disgrace, and to apparently have it sanctioned by The organisers of the Bacchanal Carnival leaves me shaking.

I am etc,

DENISE MCKENZIE
