Ban Anancy

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I read with great delight your news article on the front page of The Sunday Gleaner of March 18, 2001, concerning the first conference on regional education held by the Jamaica Teachers' Association, and the Caribbean Union of Teachers.

It expressed the fact that of more than the 200 teachers who attended, there was a strong desire "to ban Anancy as a folk hero, because it or he represents ginnal and out-smarting people". I believe the suggestion will gain wholehearted support by many Jamaicans.

We must not forget our past history as a people. However, Anancy has caused adverse effects on the minds of many; also through the electronic media, development and progress in education, folk find more things to which they can turn to find cheerfulness, comfort, hope and inspiration to help them bear the unceasing burdens and pressures of life.

Therefore, I recommend that an early date be fixed, for a national funeral when this giant, mythical Anancy, will be put to rest in misery forever. No flowers please, or shedding of tears.

I am, etc.,

LINDSAY P.

MONCRIEFFE, J.P.

Retired but active minister of religion
