Hooper the wrong choice

Adams, left and Hooper

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHEN Jimmy Adams was dropped unceremoniously as captain and player of the West Indies team I joined those complaining about the appointment of Carl Hooper. Indeed, if Mr. Hooper had returned to the region for at least two seasons and continued to show his brilliance, all of us would support his being on the team. But why get rid of Adams who never lost a series as captain in the West Indies?

Regrettably Mr. Hooper has added this latest loss to our belittlement. The Board should advise him not to make comments on his team during the series. Any comments he has about his team's talents and mistakes should be made to the team off the record. But when players note that their captain talks to the media on their skill in matches, they tend to lose their spirit. No wonder that they have tended to go down in their performance.

It is a pity that Mr. Adams has not been kept as captain with Mr. Hooper joining the team. One feels that it was unfair to dismiss him, and equally unseeming to load Mr. Hooper with the responsibility so soon after his return to the West Indies.

Congratulations to Courtney Walsh on his brilliant bowling and indeed beautiful four at the end of the fourth Test. Pity he had no one to stay with him!

I am, etc.,
