BRIDGETOWN, Barbados:
PATRICK Lee won his third gold of the meet as Jamaica continued its dominance of the Carifta Games on yesterday's final day of the annual meet.
The final tally showed Jamaica with 63 medals - 26 gold, 20 silver and 17 bronze. Barbados were next on 23; three gold, eight silver and 12 bronze.
Jamaica College's Lee captured his third individual medal when he won Boys Under-17 100 metres hurdles in a Carifta record 13.20 seconds, beating the old mark of 13.26 seconds set by Brian Haye last year in Grenada.
Running against a minus wind of 2.3 metres per second the 400 metres and 400m hurdles champion won easily from Shamar Sands of Bahamas 13.50 while bronze went to Barbadian Jesse King in 13.53. Jamaica's Orlando Barnett was fourth with 13.68.
After picking up silver and bronze in the morning session through Shaun Haughton in the Boy's Under-17 discus with 39.22m and Rose Ann Hamilton with 5.73 metres in the girls Under-20 long jump, Jamaica went on a roll in the afternoon session as they piled up gold after gold.
Also sharing in the spotlight yesterday was World Junior double sprint champion Veronica Campbell out of Vere Technical. Campbell who was very upset with her time over the 100 metres when winning on Saturday was in a no-nonsense mood yesterday.
Drawn in lane three in the final of the girls Under-20 200m she was out of the blocks like a flash covering her rivals very quickly sprinting away to a new record of 22.93 seconds, breaking her own mark of 23.05 set last year in Grenada. Danielle Norville of Barbados took silver in 23.75 with St. Kitt's and Nevis' Tiandra Ponteen taking the bronze in 23.75. Jamaica's Kerron Stewart dropped out of the event after suffering a groin injury in the 4x100m relay on Saturday.
There were also victories for Keisha Brown, Simone Facey and Dwayne Robinson.
In the Under-17 100m hurdles for girls it was one-two for Jamaica as Brown (14.09) took the gold ahead of team-mate Latoya Greaves (14.25) with Grenadan Marty Phillip taking the bronze in 14.93.
Simone Facey, like her schooolmate Campbell, captured the Under-17 sprint double. Following her victory on Saturday in the 100 metres, she captured the 200 metres in 24.15 seconds, ahead of Wanda Hutson of Trinidad and Tobago with 24.59 seconds as her team-mate Tracy Ann Rowe took the bronze in 24.87.
Robinson continued his good form at these Games as he captured gold in the Boys Under-20 110m hurdles winning in 14.46 seconds, ahead of Eddy Delepine of Martinique (14.60) seconds as Ricardo Melbourne who had a terrible start ran on strongly to take bronze in 14.88 seconds.
Following her victory in the intermediate hurdles, Melaine Walker had to settle for silver in the girls Under 20 100m hurdles in 13.87 seconds. World Junior bronze medallist and defending champion and record holder Adrianna Lamalle of Martinique took the gold in 13.64.
Jamaica got two silver medals in the boys 200 metres. In the Under-17 event Usain Bolt (21.81) finished second while team-mate Andre Wellington (22.53) was fourth. Bahamaian Graften completed the sprint double winning gold in 21.44.
In the Under-20 event, Winston Smith (21.40) had to play second fiddle to Ronald Pognon of Martinique who won in 21.18. Jamaica's Marvin Anderson took no part in this event.
Antigua's Janille Williams took her second gold of the meet as she made it five consecutive wins in the 3000 metres. Williams who won the 1500 metres on the opening day won the 3000 metres on a canter in 10:02.97. Jamaica's Tanice Barnett (10:15.06) took the silver with bronze going to St. Lucia's Nessa Paul in 10:27.54. Jamaica's other competitor Meleisha Spencer finished sixth in 11:07.03.
