Buju Banton off to Europe for one month

Buju Banton

BUJU BANTON arrived in London, England on Good Friday to start a one-month tour of the European continent. He and his 16-member entourage are expected to play all the major cities in Europe in an effort to promote his most recent album, Unchained Spirit, for Epitaph Records.

Among the cities he will play are Toulouse, Nice, Lyon, Limoges, Montpelier, Bourges, Nantes, Marseilles, Bordeaux, Paris, Rouen, Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Strasbourg, Turin, Dijon and Annecy.

His manager Donovan Germaine said the album had been selling steadily and he expected that a tour of that nature would help its impact in that market.

"He has been through Europe before and has been overwhelmingly received. We expect that this tour will go very well because he has built up quite a following on the continent," he said.

Buju Banton's album has not delivered the kind of sparks most music critics were looking to the versatile DJ for. It is his first effort for LA-based Epitaph Records, a company primarily known for its exploits in rock music.

The album was a one-off project and Germaine said they are already looking at doing the next album. No decision has been made in terms of distribution yet, but the manager is confident they will serve up a project which will perform as creditably as Buju's two top sellers, Inna Heights and Til Shiloh.

The former Mercury Records artiste has excited fans over the years with his gravely dancehall tones and his ability to ignite young females with his catchy lyrics. In more recent years he has been a 'Rastafarian Ambassador', offering a steady diet of philosophical tunes.

Germaine has indicated that Buju Banton has plans to concentrate more on his hardcore dancehall material this year.
