CABA champs delayed

By Melton Williams, Staff Reporter

ST. GEORGES, Grenada:

THE 2001 Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) championships which were scheduled to box off yesterday at the Youth Centre here has been delayed for 24 hours and will now run over three days.

The tournament starts tonight at 7:00 (6:00 Jamaica time) and climax on Saturday.

Tournament organisers, Grenada Boxing Association, said the withdrawal of Trinidad and Tobago and other territories not honouring the number of boxers that were scheduled to attend gave them little chance but to postpone the event.

The president of the local association, Emanuel Roberts, said his calculations showed more than 50 boxers have not arrived for the championships and no reason had been given.

Roberts was extremely disappointed with the withdrawal of the Trinidadians.

"They only called last night (Tuesday) and told us that they were not coming," he said.

The cut back has also affected title holders Guyana and improved Jamaica's chances of regaining the title they won in Aruba in 1999. Guyana will be represented by a 16-man squad, down from an original 24.

Other countries to have pulled out boxers include French Guiana, who arrived with one boxer instead of 10, US Virgin Islands and St. Vincent.
