Clarification on human rights groups

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE VERY least that one expects from the Attorney-General of a country is legal accuracy. So it was with deep disappointment that I read in another newspaper that the Attorney-General of Jamaica, Senator A.J. Nicholson had said there is a branch of Amnesty International in Jamaica, called Jamaicans for Justice.

In order to save the Attorney-General further embarrassment here are the facts. Jamaicans for Justice is not, and never has been, a branch of Amnesty International. Jamaicans for Justice is a legally incorporated entity and we consider ourselves a citizens rights action group. There is a branch of Amnesty International in Jamaica, it is called the Jamaican Chapter of Amnesty International.

Perhaps the Jamaican advisors to which the Attorney-General refers in his article come from the local chapter of Amnesty International.

Mr. Sane informed the public during his visit to Jamaica, that some of the sources of the information contained in the report included replies to questions by the Ministry of National Security and Justice, and the office of the Commissioner of Police. It is very disappointing that the Attorney-General did not use the opportunity provided by his article to supply the Jamaican public with specifics about the inaccuracies, half-truths, omissions and unsubstantiated claims and charges which he says the Amnesty Report is replete with.

I am sure that the Attorney-General will agree that the Jamaican people can deal with all the facts, and use them to judge for themselves.

I am etc.,
