No job - "I don't see a future here"

By Zendeen Dunbar, Contributor

SOME people may say the church has failed them or parents or boyfriends have failed them. But at 21 years old and after leaving school for so long and still being without a job, I want to say that the biggest problem I have affecting me is the people who are running the country. They have failed me because they are not running the country the way they should.

I left school and completed some CXC subjects and I am trying to get a job. However, it seems that no matter where I go seeking a job, they either have a staff that's already too big or they want to rob young people.

What I mean is that when some employers find out that you have no experience, they don't pay you what you are worth. Sometimes they also employ you as a receptionist and when you go, they start to use you as a messenger or to clean up after them.

I spent some time in The Cayman Islands and discovered that when young people leave high school there, even without much qualifications, they are able to get jobs like receptionists, store clerks and other positions until they become more qualified. I would love to see that here.

I want to see a government that cares about the people. I am going out of my mind wondering how I am going to survive in Jamaica.

I don't see any future here for us. What have we done to be rewarded with this hardship and pain? All the government is doing is making promises and more promises which are not going anywhere.

I guess we have to go where we can have a future and be more secure. This will mean that in a few years we will have a big brain drain because of the large number of people who migrate. That will be bad for the country.

I am praying and hoping that God will provide a job for me. To others like me, I say don't give up or get frustrated.
