Young Reggae Boyz lose again

JAMAICA'S Under-17 footballers ended their bid to qualify for the World Cup with a 3-0 loss to Canada yesterday in the first game of a double-header at the Hermann Stadium in St Louis, Missouri.

In the second game of the afternoon, the United States who needed just a draw to advance whipped El Salvador 4-0 to top Group A and in the process advance to the finals in Trinidad and Tobago later this month.

The young Boyz who were aiming to become the first Jamaican team to qualify back to back for a World Cup were earlier beaten 2-1 by the United States and 3-0 by El Salvador.

Meanwhile in Trelawny, Seba Football Team of Montego Bay pulled off a hard-fought face-saving 1-0 win over Arnett Gardens in a rescheduled Premier League game at the Elleston Wakeland Sports Complex.

The goal came from Brian Hill in the 33rd minute.

Earlier Seba's Kevin Bowen missed from the penalty spot after Omar Clarke was brought down by an Arnett Gardens defender.

The game which was one of the better Premier League encounters played in Falmouth, was evenly contested and saw the ball swinging from end to end.

Having already qualified for the semi-finals it was believed that Arnett Gardens would have just gone through the motion to complete their fixture but they came out firing on all cylinders.

Coach of Arnett Gardens, Jerome Waite, was visibly upset at the loss. He said he wanted a win this could decide his opponents in the semi-finals.

The result was, however, of academic interest to Seba as they have already been relegated to the National A League.

In another game at the Elleston Wakeland Complex, Harmony defeated Flames 1-0 in the first match of the two-way final of the National Rums of Trelawny Super League Football competition.

The goal came in the 52nd minute when Orlando Grey simply tapped the ball in after Flames' custodian Mark Williams failed to hold a cross from Loycon Brissett.

The game was evenly contested and Flames came very close to scoring on two occasions.

A 40th minute shot from Roger Williams brought out a spectacular save from Harmony's goalkeeper Coy Jenkins. On the stroke of halftime a powerhouse free kick taken by Rohan McAnuff rocked the cross bar.

Manager of Harmony, Linton Brady, although a bit disappointed as he had earlier boasted his team would be wrapping up the final from this game, said he is still confident of the crown.

Coach Samuel Johnson of Flames discounted the one-goal lead and said he believed his team will rebound after working out some weaknesses.

The second leg will be played on the April 29 at the same venue.
