College of Agriculture career expo on tomorrow

THE STUDENT affairs division of the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) will be hosting its annual Career Expo tomorrow at the college, Passley Garden, Portland.

Several local companies and organisations from a wide cross-section of the society will be participating in the expo. Students will be exposed to various career information as well as job opportunities. Students will also be assisted in the development of resumes.

Information network workshop

The college recently hosted a workshop for the Jamaican Agricultural Documentation and Information Network. More than ten librarians from several local organisations including the Ministry of Agriculture, University of the West Indies, Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture, Knockalva Agricultural School, Elim Agricultural School and the Scientific Research Council were in attendance.

The college's recently required Electronic Agricultural Library was the major feature of the workshop. Chief librarian at CASE, Ms. Caseta Nelson demonstrated the use of the equipment and outlined opportunities for technology transfer. The library contains 218 compact discs with 130 academic journals.

CASE president, Mr. Hopeton Fraser in his welcome address to the participants, pledged the support of the college in sharing technical information with the public. He also urged the librarians to be more opened to share information with other institutions with limited resources.

Nova Scotia visitors assist degree programme

Professors Dr. Dian Dunlop and Dr. Nance Crowe and administrator Mr. Leane French from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College are currently on a two-week visit at the College to finalise plans for the proposed Bachelors of Technology programme.

The visitors have been working on the programme's curriculum as well as evaluating project activities. The B.Tech degree blends hands on, high level skills and theoretical knowledge in specific technologically intensive disciplines by combining the study of a scientific discipline with the associated technology.

The programme will offer majors in agricultural production, food systems management and environmental science. Graduates from CASE and the former College of Agriculture and Jamaica School of Agriculture have been targeted to purse these programmes.

Internship programme

Second-year students in the faculty of science recently completed their Co-operative Internship Education Programme. The Sugar Industry Research Institute, Cable and Wireless, Jamaica Public Services Company and Appleton Estates were the participating organisations. Each student will deliver a presentation on their working experience on May 3 at the college.
