ST. HUGH'S retained their Under-19 school girls hockey title with a 3-2 penalty triumph over Wolmer's after an intense battle in the final at the Mona Hockey field yesterday.

The score at the end of regulation time was 1-1 with field goals from Wolmer's Deidre-Ann Clarke (49th minute) and St Hugh's Shereika Elliot who scored the equaliser two minutes before time (68th minute).

Neither team scored in extra time and as a result, the fiercely competitive game was pushed to the penalty stage. It was Candice Plummer who scored the winner for St Hugh's with the team's other goal coming from Teisha Rose.

Captain Martina Burton scored the other goal for Wolmer's.

Victorious coach Jasmine Campbell was in high spirits at the end of the game which lasted two hours and 47 minutes.

"When we were down 0-1, I told them to get the ball up to the scoring area and apply pressure until we got our goal. We were a bit worried when it came down to penalties because in training we didn't look that good but we had enough St. Hugh's spirit and wanted to win badly.

"We did and as coach, I am proud. Even if we had lost I would still have been proud of the girls because they did their best. They really did well against Wolmer's who proved themselves to be worthy opponents. We prepared for them, but they made us dig deep for this win," Campbell said.

Meanwhile, Munro College and Jamaica College will share the boys' title after a powercut brought a premature end to their game with the score locked at 2-2 in regulation time.

Fitz Myrie scored twice (30th and 62nd minutes) for Munro while Owen Buckley scored for JC in the 57th minute. Details on the other goal was not available at press time.
